(Photo by Scott Cunningham/Getty Images)After a freshman season at Georgia that ended with only limited snaps, five-star quarterback Justin Fields ultimately transferred to Ohio State. While many fans and pundits were confused as to why he would leave the program after just one year, a former Super Bowl-winning quarterback claims he saw the writing on the wall early. In an interview with DawgNation on Monday, former Super Bowl champion Trent Dilfer said he was not surprised that it didn’t work out for Fields at Georgia and revealed that he even warned Fields against going there.“I was probably the only guy that wasn’t surprised. I told him it wasn’t a good move to go there,” Dilfer said. “He’s a unique talent, one of the best I’ve ever seen. But these kids when they’re in high school think they’re just going to go in and beat the stud in front of him. And Jake’s a great player.”Dilfer explained that the Bulldogs were never going to rotate star quarterback Jake Fromm out often enough for Fields to develop.“The dual thing was never going to work with them rotating between quarterbacks,” Dilfer said. “And Jake, because of his command of the offense and the success he had as a freshman, to me, I just didn’t think it was a good move.”Fields’ freshman season ended with 328 passing yards and four touchdowns, with another 266 rushing yards and four touchdowns on the ground.Fromm, on the other hand, started for the Bulldogs in all 14 of their games, completing 67.4-percent of his passes for 2,761 yards and 30 touchdowns. After the season, Fields announced his transfer to Ohio State. It is still unclear if Fields will be eligible to play for the Buckeyes in 2019.However, with the recent transfer of Ohio State quarterback Tate Martell to Miami, Fields certainly has a better chance of winning the starting job if he is granted eligibility.last_img read more
