Contract limit for jobless engineers raised in Maharashtra

first_imgWith an eye on next year’s elections, the Maharashtra government has announced fresh sops and financial assistance for jobless engineers and defunct power looms across the State. The government on Friday increased contract limits for jobless engineers from the existing ₹75 lakh to ₹1.50 crore, increasing empanelment limits to 20 years from the existing 10 and five in various categories, officials confirmed. “Some departments have been individually giving works worth up to ₹75 lakh to unemployed engineers. This has been extended to all departments, with an increased limit of ₹1.5 crore in several categories. For these departments, too, we have set up an empanelment limit of five and ten years which has now been increased to 20 years,” said Sachin Chivate, under secretary, Maharashtra Government. Earlier this year, at a convocation ceremony at IIT- Bombay, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had urged engineering institutions to focus more on quality rather than quantity of students for research in cutting-edge science and technology, with focus on national priorities. Mr. Modi had said the country is producing over seven lakh engineers every year but not all of them are graduating with the right set of skills. For the small scale industries and cooperatives working in the textile sector, the State has announced an interest on loan subsidy for struggling power looms. The scheme was formally announced by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Union Minister Smriti Irani while inaugurating the PowerTex India Schemes in 43 cities earlier this year. “We have opened a new budget head for providing funds for the scheme this year,” said a textile department official.last_img read more

Significant Strides made to Remove Red Tape

first_img Mrs. Ffolkes-Abrahams stated that to improve the country’s global competitiveness and business ranking, “we must cut the red tape.” This undertaking forms part of the Government’s strategic priorities for 2013/2014, focusing on job creation and economic growth. The Minister stated that the Ministry is currently instituting a number of key reform initiatives to improve the business environment. Story Highlights Significant strides have been made in the removal of red tape hindering the progress of business development and growth in Jamaica, as the Government moves to implement strategies to make the country more business-friendly, while increasing its global competitiveness. This was  stated by State Minister for Industry, Investment and Commerce, Hon. Sharon Ffolkes-Abrahams, as she addressed the opening of  a two-day National Productivity Conference at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel, in Kingston, on October 8.The State Minister  pointed out that the Ministry is currently instituting a number of key reform initiatives to improve the business environment. These include a secured transaction regime, which will allow borrowers to pledge moveable property as security for loans, resulting in improved access to credit; modernising the insolvency legislation, which will encourage more businesses to restart after failure; and amendments to the Trade Marks and Copyright Acts, which will increase investor protection. This undertaking forms part of the Government’s strategic priorities for 2013/2014, focusing on job creation and economic growth.“Business facilitation is a core ingredient for sustained investments, and for improvement in national productivity and economic growth in Jamaica. It is important for the development of a strong entrepreneurial sector in our economy, which is crucial for job creation,” she said.Mrs. Ffolkes-Abrahams contended that to significantly improve the country’s global competitiveness and doing business ranking, “we must cut the red tape.”“This must be done if we are to have any hope of moving our economy on a path of sustainable growth,” she emphasized. The State Minister noted that the 2013/2014 Global Competitiveness Report has singled out red tape as the most problematic factor affecting Jamaica’s competitiveness.Citing the 2013 Doing Business Report, she said the country has made some improvements in reducing the difficulty experienced by businesses in paying taxes. In this respect, Jamaica moved up 11 places from 174 out of 185 countries to 163 in the current fiscal year.“We also continue to do well relative to other economies in terms of ease of starting a business and dealing with construction permits, ranking 21 and 50, respectively. In comparison to Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), the process to start a business in Jamaica is less cumbersome. In Jamaica, one has to follow a six-step procedure compared to nine steps in the LAC. It takes seven days to start a business compared to 53 days in the LAC,” she said. The conference is being held under the theme: ‘Productivity – Pathway to Competitiveness and Growth’. It is hosted by the Jamaica Productivity Centre (JPC) in observance of Productivity Awareness Week – October 7 to 11.The conference seeks to provide learning opportunities and valuable information on productivity for employees at all levels, in private and public sector organisations.last_img read more

first_imgNew Delhi: Cafe chain operator Coffee Day Enterprises on Tuesday said it is assessing the situation after its founder and chairman V G Siddhartha went missing and formulating appropriate steps to ensure business operations are unaffected. The company’s board has held emergency meeting following disappearance of Siddhartha and also reviewed the letter purportedly signed by him and shared copies with relevant authorities, the company said in a regulatory filing. The letter also talked about “harassment” by I-T Department official, who initially attached his shares in Mindtree. On Tuesday moring, the company confirmed that Siddhartha has been missing since Monday evening. The company said Siddhartha is not reachable since Monday evening. “We are taking the help of concerned authorities.” Siddhartha reportedly had been witnessing rising debts, especially in the last few years. “I would like to say I gave it my all. I am very sorry to let down all the people that put their trust in me. I fought for a long time but today I gave up as I could not take any more pressure from one of the private equity partners forcing me to buy back shares, a transaction I had partially completed six months ago by borrowing a large sum of money from a friend,” he purportedly said in the letter. Siddhartha, in the said letter, also took sole responsibility of all financial transactions undertaken by the company. “I sincerely request each of you to be strong and to continue running these businesses with a new management. I am solely responsible for all mistakes. Every financial transaction is my responsibility. My team, auditors and senior management are totally unaware of all my transactions. The law should hold me and only me accountable, as I have withheld this information from everybody including my family”. The letter, however, does not elaborate more on that. “My intention was never to cheat or mislead anybody, I have failed as an entrepreneur. This is my sincere submission, I hope someday you will understand, forgive and pardon me,” he added. Shoemaker Crocs delivering by drone

first_imgClose Shoemaker Crocs showed off a possible future alternative to heading out to its store as it experimented with helicopter drones as a delivery option at a pop-up store on 5 March.Shoppers were able to select a pair of shoes on an iPad screen and by touching a take off button, they prompted the drone to begin its delivery journey. The drone then proceeded to hover over the shoes before attempting – with the help of a magnet – to grab hold of a pair and carry them back to a waiting basket ready for the customer to collect. While not every pair made it successfully into shoppers baskets immediately, some anxious customers did manage to see their shoes delivered. The drones have been specially adapted from commercially available products for the temporary store, which will be open until 8 March.Morrie Fujita, vice president and general manager for Crocs Japan, said there were not any plans to use the drones in the long term.Whilst most drones kept missing their targets and, in one case, flying off haphazardly into the crowd, it was – if nothing else – an adventurous shopping experience.last_img read more

Bird embryos respond to adult warning calls inside their shells

first_imgA pair of researchers with Universidad de Vigo has found that yellow-legged gull embryos respond to parental warning calls by vibrating inside their shells. In their paper published in the journal Nature Ecology and Evolution, Jose Noguera and Alberto Velando describe their study of the gulls in their lab and what they learned. © 2019 Science X Network Prior research has shown that embryonic birds, amphibians, reptiles, and even insects receive sensory information that helps them prepare for the harsh reality of the real world. In this new effort, Noguera and Velando have found evidence that yellow-legged gull embryos hear the warning cries of their parents and respond to them. They also found that hearing adult warning cries resulted in chicks with physical and behavioral changes, as well. The experiments by the researchers involved collecting 90 gull eggs from nests along the shores of Sálvora Island and bringing them back to their lab for testing. They separated the eggs into individual three-egg clutches and incubated them. The researchers then pulled two of the three eggs from each incubator and exposed them four times a day to either recorded adult warning sounds or silence. The researchers report that the embryos exposed to the shrill warning calls would vibrate when the recordings were played—and they continued vibrating for some time even after they were returned to their incubator. They suspected that the vibrations could be felt by the nest mate that had not heard the recordings. To find out, they monitored the embryos after they hatched as chicks. They report that the birds exposed to the warning sounds took longer to hatch, and when they finally did so, they were quieter than the chicks that had been exposed to silence. The hatchlings also crouched lower when exposed to perceived threats. And they were smaller overall, and had shorter legs. Interestingly, the clutch mates of the chicks exposed to the recordings had all the same differences, though they were not exposed to the warning calls. The researchers suggest this indicates that they felt the vibrations of nearby embryos and responded as if they had heard the warning calls themselves. Explore further More information: Jose C.
