Donegal entrepreneurs leading the way on ACORNS Programme

first_imgAn exciting six months lie ahead for the eight successful Donegal entrepreneurs who have earned a coveted place on the ACORNS initiative for women-led start-up businesses. The businesswomen all battled strong competition to gain a place on the peer-led support network for rural Ireland.Donegal has the highest number of female entrepreneurs on ACORNS this cycle, who will be benefiting from the expert support of Deirdre McGlone. Inishowen is well represented with two participants running their business from the peninsula. The places went to Avril McMonagle founder of Meantóir,  a specialist training and professional support service for early childhood education; and Carlene Lyttle of Sailespin a specialist business support service for companies looking to foster growth. The mantle for the south of the county is being carried by Joanne Butler of OURganic Gardens – a garden project combining education, tourism and community based in beautiful Gort a’Choirce and Meg O’Gara of Megnificent Creative based in Kilcar offering graphic design and creative illustration. Bundoran also features well with Nicola Gavigan from the unique experience Seclusion Spa at Ardfarna and Sinead Fox from the already award-winning Salty Fox Coffee Shop. Marie Hutchinson from the well-being focused Mojo Yoga and Wellness Studio in Donegal Town and Sue Glackin of Donegal Food Tours based in Letterkenny complete the Donegal posse of entrepreneurs embarking on this exciting opportunity. Built on a belief that entrepreneurs learn best from each other, the ACORNS initiative is facilitated by ‘Lead Entrepreneurs’; women who have started and grown successful businesses in rural Ireland. The Donegal Acorns group is led by successful businesswoman Deirdre McGlone, former ‘Donegal Person of the Year’ and President of the Donegal Women in Business Network. Over the next six months Deirdre will work with the eight women-led businesses to maximise their business through peer-support, mentoring, and networking. The businesses supported by the previous Acorns initiative recorded a 43% increase in turnover. Access to finance and marketing were the barriers to developing businesses in rural Ireland, as identified by the participants, which ACORNS aims to address over the next 6 months. ACORNS is funded under the Rural Innovation and Development Fund through the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine. 15 Things Blogging Venture Capitalists Love in 2011

first_imgVenture Capitalists have a big impact on the software that hits the web and the rest of us have been fortunate to get a good look into many of their minds thanks to the recent rise of the blogging VC. Some VCs love to share how they think about various technology issues on their blogs – but what do they really love?VC Larry Cheng posted his 4th annual Venture Capitalist Blog Index today, listing and ranking 155 blogs written by venture capitalists. I discovered it when a feed we have in our team RSS reader tracking comments posted around the web by VC Fred Wilson delivered the link. I put the list into ITA Software’s Needlebase, scraped a list of all the blogs, then put them in a Blekko custom search engine. I searched for the word “love” (as I always do in any new search opportunity) and found that these 155 blogging VCs have used the word love in exactly 15 blog posts so far this year. What do they love? Read on for an amusing survey of 15 things blogging VCs love in 2011. Mark Suster loves info graphics. He said so in a comment on his post How to Handle a VC Presentation with No Deck.Chris Dixon says that people love horse races like NYC vs Silcon Valley, Facebook vs Twitter, IPO markets vs private exchanges, the valuation of some startup vs some other startup. But he says that “these questions are all footnotes that will be forgotten in a few years,” in his wide-eyed and awesome blog post PREDICTING THE FUTURE OF THE INTERNET IS EASY: ANYTHING IT HASN’T YET DRAMATICALLY TRANSFORMED, IT WILL.Brad Feld loves working with entrepreneurs and helping create new companies. It’s all about doing what you love, he writes in a reflection post titled Snow in Seattle.Jeff Bussgang says that if you love running your business, that’s one of the factors that can make it wise to walk away from large sums of money. He’s sat with two portfolio companies that have made that decision recently and wrote about it in a post titled Walking Away From Liquidity.Charlie O’Donnell is excited about the new API for Q&A site Quora he says he’d love a Quora column in Tweetdeck and a Quora Feedera email digest in his inbox. He’s looking for a way to “monitor the important conversations without having to sit in it all day.” Hey Charlie, this isn’t as cool as a Tweetdeck column, but did you know that Quora provides RSS feeds (ReadWriteWeb asked them to and they did!) including for Answers posted by username? And the URL structure is really simple. (My answers are at http://www.quora.com/Marshall-Kirkpatrick/answers/rss) If you’ve got a list of people you find compelling, it’s not hard to build an OPML file of all the questions they answer. (I put their names in a text file, find and replace to turn those into feed URLs, then use a plain-text-to-OPML web service, save the file locally and import into a reader of your choice.) Primo signal-to-noise there, too. Will an API propel Quora into the mainstream… and will that suck?Rob Day loves the funny looking dogs that win the Westminster Kennel Dog Show. “Be polarizing,” he urges entrepreneurs raising money. “The winner always seems to be some funny-looking dog, often a variety of dog you’ve never heard of even if the general category is familiar, and probably a dog that some people roll their eyes at and some people love. That’s what you want your pitch to be.” How to raise venture capital for a cleantech startup in 2011Brad Feld loves the web design firm Slice of Lime.Albert Wenger loves being told that his idea for a namespace for people is completely crazy.Mark Suster loved getting to see the White House. How Twitter Got Me into The White House & Saved My Son’s BirthdayAlbert Wenger again, in a prior conversation about his namespace for people idea, said he’d “love to hear from folks whether they think these are real problems with the current de facto solution and how services should deal with them (ideally with examples of good or bad implementations).”Charlie Daniels would love to do an experiment with the students in his college class to test his theory that socioeconomic background is a primary determinate of a person’s comfort meeting new people.Brad Feld loves starting off the year with CES.Fred Wilson hands his blog over to guest poster Charlie Crystal, who points out that startup founders love to take risks – including stupid ones when it’s with their own money. M&A Case Study: ChiliSoftJeff Bussgang loves five apps he found in 2010 (Flipboard, Instapaper, Disqus, Foursquare and Tweetdeck) He wonders if they will blow up as businesses in 2011.Fred Wilson kicked off 2011 with the awesome statement that he loves “doing random stuff on the web which takes me to new places and new ideas.” Cheers to that, Fred! Drain Water Heat Recovery Gets a Boost in Ontario

first_imgOntario has become the first province or state in North America to recognize drain-water heat recovery (DWHR) as part of its building energy code. Provincial builders will now be able to use DWHR to meet energy-savings requirements in the Ontario building code, and the change also should prove a boost for manufacturers.Drain-water heat recovery is a way of extracting heat from hot water that’s dumped down a drain — from a shower, for example. The units, which cost an average of $600 to $800, according to one Canadian manufacturer, consist of a copper heat exchanger that replaces part of a conventional drain line. Copper tubing wrapped around the outside of the pipe carries incoming water and allows it to pick up the heat of the drain water that’s exiting the house.According to RenewABILITY Energy Inc., manufacturer of the Power-Pipe, adding DWHR will lower total energy costs for new homes by about 10% and lower water heating costs by at least 20%.The company said the change in Ontario sets the stage for similar moves in other parts of Canada and the United States. The technology has already been adopted in France and the United Kingdom and is expected to be approved in Sweden as well, the company said. Contract limit for jobless engineers raised in Maharashtra

first_imgWith an eye on next year’s elections, the Maharashtra government has announced fresh sops and financial assistance for jobless engineers and defunct power looms across the State. The government on Friday increased contract limits for jobless engineers from the existing ₹75 lakh to ₹1.50 crore, increasing empanelment limits to 20 years from the existing 10 and five in various categories, officials confirmed. “Some departments have been individually giving works worth up to ₹75 lakh to unemployed engineers. This has been extended to all departments, with an increased limit of ₹1.5 crore in several categories. For these departments, too, we have set up an empanelment limit of five and ten years which has now been increased to 20 years,” said Sachin Chivate, under secretary, Maharashtra Government. Earlier this year, at a convocation ceremony at IIT- Bombay, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had urged engineering institutions to focus more on quality rather than quantity of students for research in cutting-edge science and technology, with focus on national priorities. Mr. Modi had said the country is producing over seven lakh engineers every year but not all of them are graduating with the right set of skills. For the small scale industries and cooperatives working in the textile sector, the State has announced an interest on loan subsidy for struggling power looms. The scheme was formally announced by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Union Minister Smriti Irani while inaugurating the PowerTex India Schemes in 43 cities earlier this year. “We have opened a new budget head for providing funds for the scheme this year,” said a textile department official.last_img read more

Irregularities in labour schemes in Rajasthan

first_imgA social audit of labour welfare schemes in Rajasthan, conducted on the Supreme Court’s direction, has revealed several irregularities, including registration of a large number of those who were not entitled to the benefits of the schemes. The State government has planned a crackdown to check irregularities and promised action against the guilty officials.‘Panel to take action’Minister of State for Labour Tika Ram Jully said in the Assembly that a committee comprising the Labour Secretary, Labour Commissioner and senior officers would examine the complaints and take suitable action. The department has already blocked 24 E-Mitra Centres after receiving reports about labourers’ registration on the basis of forged documents.Mr. Jully said the social audit had revealed that 33% of beneficiaries of the schemes meant for construction workers were those who were not employed in this sector, while the construction labourers were identified in a five-month-long campaign in the State. Besides, the cess from owners of buildings was not collected in the correct proportion of the buildings actually constructed. The Minister said a labour inspector was suspended on charges of accepting bribe.last_img read more

Significant Strides made to Remove Red Tape

first_img Mrs. Ffolkes-Abrahams stated that to improve the country’s global competitiveness and business ranking, “we must cut the red tape.” This undertaking forms part of the Government’s strategic priorities for 2013/2014, focusing on job creation and economic growth. The Minister stated that the Ministry is currently instituting a number of key reform initiatives to improve the business environment. Story Highlights Significant strides have been made in the removal of red tape hindering the progress of business development and growth in Jamaica, as the Government moves to implement strategies to make the country more business-friendly, while increasing its global competitiveness. This was  stated by State Minister for Industry, Investment and Commerce, Hon. Sharon Ffolkes-Abrahams, as she addressed the opening of  a two-day National Productivity Conference at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel, in Kingston, on October 8.The State Minister  pointed out that the Ministry is currently instituting a number of key reform initiatives to improve the business environment. These include a secured transaction regime, which will allow borrowers to pledge moveable property as security for loans, resulting in improved access to credit; modernising the insolvency legislation, which will encourage more businesses to restart after failure; and amendments to the Trade Marks and Copyright Acts, which will increase investor protection. This undertaking forms part of the Government’s strategic priorities for 2013/2014, focusing on job creation and economic growth.“Business facilitation is a core ingredient for sustained investments, and for improvement in national productivity and economic growth in Jamaica. It is important for the development of a strong entrepreneurial sector in our economy, which is crucial for job creation,” she said.Mrs. Ffolkes-Abrahams contended that to significantly improve the country’s global competitiveness and doing business ranking, “we must cut the red tape.”“This must be done if we are to have any hope of moving our economy on a path of sustainable growth,” she emphasized. The State Minister noted that the 2013/2014 Global Competitiveness Report has singled out red tape as the most problematic factor affecting Jamaica’s competitiveness.Citing the 2013 Doing Business Report, she said the country has made some improvements in reducing the difficulty experienced by businesses in paying taxes. In this respect, Jamaica moved up 11 places from 174 out of 185 countries to 163 in the current fiscal year.“We also continue to do well relative to other economies in terms of ease of starting a business and dealing with construction permits, ranking 21 and 50, respectively. In comparison to Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), the process to start a business in Jamaica is less cumbersome. In Jamaica, one has to follow a six-step procedure compared to nine steps in the LAC. It takes seven days to start a business compared to 53 days in the LAC,” she said. The conference is being held under the theme: ‘Productivity – Pathway to Competitiveness and Growth’. It is hosted by the Jamaica Productivity Centre (JPC) in observance of Productivity Awareness Week – October 7 to 11.The conference seeks to provide learning opportunities and valuable information on productivity for employees at all levels, in private and public sector organisations.last_img read more
