Australia says anyone entering the country must self-isolate

first_imgAustralia’s Prime Minister Scott Morrison said all people arriving from overseas will have to self isolate for 14 days, as his government stepped up efforts to slow the spread of the coronavirus. The order will come into force at midnight, Morrison said in a televised address Sunday. Australia will also ban cruise ships from foreign ports from docking in Australia for 30 days and will prohibit mass gatherings of 500 people or more, though schools will remain open.“We are going to have to get used to some changes in how we live our lives over the next six months or so,” Morrison told reporters after a meeting of the national Cabinet. “We know that the virus cannot be absolutely stopped,” he said. “But we can slow the spread” to protect the most vulnerable in society. The measures announced Sunday are another escalation of the response by the government, which has announced a A$17.6 billion ($10.9 billion) stimulus package to buttress the economy.Following advice from health professionals, Morrison also said “static, non-essential” gatherings should not go ahead if more than 500 people attend. These include places such as stadiums and theaters where people are in close proximity with each other for a sustained period of time, he said. On Friday, he stopped short of an outright ban on mass gatherings as it opted instead to “advise” against them.Nations around the world are trying to shield citizens from the deadly virus. France has shut cafes and restaurants, while Spain declared an emergency as cases rose to more than 145,000 worldwide and the death toll increased to more than 5,700.New Zealand on Saturday announced similar measures to Australia’s, requiring almost every individual who enters the country, including citizens and residents, to self-isolate for 14 days.In Australia, 249 people have been infected, from 197 on Saturday, health authorities said. Morrison said his Cabinet would now meet via teleconference as part of social distancing measures. Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton is in isolation after testing positive.Topics :last_img read more

HONEYMOON STAKES QUOTES

first_imgBRICE BLANC, SPANISH QUEEN, WINNER: “She keeps improving. Richard has done a great job. He takes his time and he’s been trying to get her to settle down and take everything in. She’s getting more and more professional. She has so many gears, she has a good turn of foot and she puts me in good spots as well. She’s done everything well and she even seemed like she was a step better than her last race. She just needs to keep improving, she’s special.“She handled herself really well today, she’s a fireball though.“She helped me today. Ninety percent of horses wouldn’t have gone through that hole but she didn’t chicken out on me; she’s got a big heart and I was able to maneuver her.“I was loaded the whole way, she was galloping. I was just like ‘I hope something opens up because I could see (Richard) pulling out the rest of the hair that he does have!’“She’s just got it from the start. She’s professional, she loves racing, even when she started working. She’s getting better and better. NOTES: The owners are Harry Bederian, Harout Kamberian and Hagop Nakkashian TRAINER QUOTES RICHARD BALTAS, SPANISH QUEEN, WINNER: “She has a helluva turn of foot. Brice made a good move there at the top of the lane. I thought he was going to go around, which probably wouldn’t have mattered but he did make a helluva move there splitting horses.“She’s always breezed like a good horse. She just lowers herself and she gets it.“Brice has been on her every time to breeze her and I think she’s the kind of horse that needs the same person to get used to because she can be a little difficult.“I think maybe she’s just had more experience going farther. I thought last time out, that horse (Spirit of Xian) walked on the lead and she got pressured today which helped us out. She got an easy lead last out and we were tracking her that day.“We’ll just have to play it by ear. I wasn’t even planning on this race but I let the horse tell me what to do and she was begging me to go out there. If she comes out of the race good and she really wants to go, then maybe we go in the American Oaks, (Grade I, $400,000, 1 1/4 miles on turf May 30) because it looks like we’re the horse to beat. Audio Checklist for Video Editors

first_imgImplement these audio tips for success and raise the quality of your video editing projects!Nothing screams “amateur!” like bad audio. Even if your project has stunning visual images, your project will suffer if proper attention isn’t paid to creating a quality, complimentary audio track.  We’ve put together the following tips for the video editor looking to improve the sound mix of their projects!Only use high-res audio in your projectsMP3s may be useful for web applications, but in video WAVs or AIFFs are better choices. These file types are less compressed and will sound cleaner and crisper. MP3s can also prove to be finicky in some video editing applications, like Final Cut Pro. An additional step you can take to avoid complications in post is ensuring that all the audio elements in your project have the same sample rate – the standard for digital video is 48 kHz. Check out our previous post on the best audio formats for video editing for additional information.Let music drive the videoYour goal is to use music to enhance the feeling of your video, not work against it. Pull a handful of songs that you think will work for a particular scene or project. Then, VERY roughly lay out the video track and audition each of these songs underneath it to see how they work together. Once you’ve decided on an audio track, then use that music as a guide for editing the video (in most cases cutting to the tempo and beats).Keep your audio tracks organizedAssign different audio tracks in your project to different audio types. For instance, keep all dialogue on tracks 1-4, all music on tracks 5-8 and all sound effects on tracks 9-10. Think to yourself, “if another editor had to sit down at this project would they be able to quickly identify each audio clip?” It’s best practice to keep the project organized as you go, but it’s ESSENTIAL to clean it up before archiving.  Keeping an organized timeline will likely save you time and a bit of sanity.Use sound effects to enhance actionSound effects are often one of the last things to get added to a mix, so it likely falls off when you’re up against a deadline. Instead, think of sound effects early in the post process. When you’re reviewing footage take notes of instances where sound effects may add value to a scene. If you’re working with a sound designer, discuss opportunities for incorporating sound effects in the mix. The right sound effects can help set the tone and add pacing to your project. Check out our previous post for other tips on using sound effects to improve your videos.Don’t skimp on the room toneConnect with the on-location audio person before the shoot to ensure they’re recording room tone every time the scene or environment changes. Anytime the on-camera sound drops off (this can often happen between cuts) make sure you’re using room tone to cover this audio dead space. This will keep the mix sounding most consistent and be less jarring to the listener.Test your mixOn what device will your project be seen? With the wide variety of digital video devices it’s important to listen to your mix just as the intended viewer would.  Get a strong baseline mix in you audio or video editing application, and then refine it to fit the final delivery format. For instance, you may want to consider adding extra bass to an audio track that will primarily be heard through treble heavy low-grade computer speakers. Keep the final output in mind when doing your final mix.Utilize meters when setting levelsYour ears will fool you. It’s impossible to keep a consistent mix when adjusting from your own hearing alone. If you’re making adjustments by ear you’ll likely find that the overall mix will get louder and louder through the timeline. As you become accustomed to the audio level you’ll unknowingly raise the audio little by little, so that the end of the project sounds significantly louder than the start.  Avoid this editing mistake by utilizing the audio meters within your video editing application.  A standard in digital video is to keep most audio around -12 db with audio spikes not exceed 0db (12 db of headroom).  If you’re outputting for web it’s likely you’ll want to run the mix a bit hotter to account for computer speakers (around -6db).  Everyone’s hearing is different so use the audio meters to get a consistent result.Have audio tips to share?  Let us know in the comments!last_img read more

How Social Selling Jumped the Shark

first_imgThere aren’t too many people who believe as deeply as I do in the power of the social tools in business. And yes, salespeople can use these tools to good effect. So this is going to sting a little bit, but here is the truth:Social Selling has jumped the shark.Too much hype. It’s never good to overpromise and under deliver. But that is what social selling has done. It has been offered as the panacea to all the problems that ail sales organizations, and in doing so, the case has been greatly overstated. Wait. It gets worse. The social selling pitch has misled salespeople and sales organization. I am not sure why the social selling proponents have felt that their best argument for using social tools was to suggest that all other methods of prospecting no longer work. The tools have value without making such claims. But too many people have believed this claim, and to their detriment. Honestly, I do know why the proponents of social selling target traditional prospecting methods; that is the primary area where social tools create potential value.Misreading of trends and research. Buyers are on the Internet. Why? Because everyone is on the Internet. The fact that buyers have a LinkedIn profile and a Twitter account provides no more evidence that they want an email or a connection request from a salesperson than a telephone proves they want a phone call. Let’s say I am wrong. Let’s say that buyers are burning up the web getting the evaluation stage of their buying process. That doesn’t change what salespeople need to do to succeed. In fact, it would make those actions more necessary–and more urgent. The words “social selling” don’t match the outcomes salespeople need. The social tools are spectacular for researching your dream clients. For a salesperson with already great prospecting chops, they are incredibly useful. But the social tools only deal with targets above the funnel. They create awareness, brand recognition, and an opportunity to connect. They even allow you to ask for an appointment, should you be so old school. But the tools don’t lend themselves to most of what salespeople do outside of prospecting and nurturing.Proponents sell the idea that to sell you have to not sell. The proponents of social selling suggest that the best way to sell is to not sell at all. Instead, you are supposed to be helpful. This pitch is very appealing to a certain segment of people who carry the title of salesperson without really embracing the role. This idea is causing salespeople and sales organizations to produce results that are less than they should be. It’s too passive. It assumes that inbound opportunities are enough or are somehow more valuable than outbound opportunities. There is nothing about outbound that makes it inherently more self-oriented than inbound. The social curriculum isn’t aligned with real sales outcomes. The curriculum for some of the social selling courses I have seen are mostly built on the proper use of the tools, like setting up a good LinkedIn profile, and writing a good introduction email. They’re built on the idea that “connecting” and “sharing” is the goal. These ideas drive awareness, build your personal brand, and may even allow you to nurture your dream client. These are more marketing than sales. The real goal in any social selling program should be appointment-setting. In fact, I might sign up for a course called: “Appointment-setting using LinkedIn.” Or maybe, “How to Make the Ask Using LinkedIn.”Like social media marketing, anyone with command of the tools is an expert. Try to find a social media marketing expert now. The people with true marketing chops ran away from this title years ago, when every marketing person with a blog and a Twitter account self-identified as an expert. Now they recognize themselves as content marketers or work in digital marketing. Some of the best people in this space never called themselves social media marketers at all, recognizing that the tools were not the deep, underlying force at work but enablers. But a command of the tools doesn’t translate to being able to help produce the main outcome for salespeople, namely acquiring new customers.People with great prospecting chops are great at social too. The salespeople that are good on the phone, good in a room, and good in a face-to-face meeting with a prospect are also good when it comes to using the social tools. They have the requisite confidence. But the folks that lack the confidence in real life, aren’t much better with the social tools. Mostly they hide behind email, afraid to ask for the commitments they really need to create or win an opportunity. The people who benefit the most from social tools and content marketing are entrepreneurs and thought-leaders. Salespeople can’t (or shouldn’t) publish. There is a difference between being a content creator and a curator. Both roles have value, but content is still King (or Queen), and it’s the creator that benefits the most from its sharing. Salespeople need marketing to give them the insights and the tools to share ideas that create value and nurture a relationship. Marketing applies these tools broadly. When salespeople market, it must be done one-to-one, as that it the nature of the relationship.By pretending to be too much, social selling is too little. It could be more. It should be more. The professional proponents of using the social tools understand the value that they create, but they don’t overstate that value. They also readily admit that the social tools do nothing to replace traditional prospecting approaches, but rather, they supplement them.If you are in business-to-business sales, you need to use the social tools. Especially the most useful tool in this regard, LinkedIn. Then you need to go back to doing the work of selling. Get the Free eBook! Learn how to sell without a sales manager. Download my free eBook!
