No Winner of Mo Ibrahim Prize

first_imgThe Mo Ibrahim Foundation on Friday, June 17 announced that there is no winner of the 2015 Ibrahim Prize for Achievement in African Leadership. The announcement was made following a meeting of the independent Prize Committee chaired by Dr. Salim Ahmed Salim.Commenting on the decision of the Prize Committee, Mo Ibrahim, and Chairman of the Mo Ibrahim Foundation, said: “The Board respects the decision of the independent Prize Committee. When we launched the Prize ten years ago, we deliberately set a very high bar. “We want the Prize to shine a spotlight on outstanding leadership to provide role models right across society, as well as supporting laureates to continue to serve the continent by sharing their wisdom and experience.”The candidates for the Ibrahim Prize are all former African executive Heads of State or Government who have left office during the last three calendar years, having been democratically elected and served their constitutionally mandated term. The Prize Committee meets on a regular basis to review eligible candidates and has begun considering candidates for the 2016 Ibrahim Prize. Since being launched in 2006, the Ibrahim Prize has been awarded four times. The previous Laureates are President Hifikepunye Pohamba of Namibia (2014), President Pedro Pires of Cape Verde (2011), President Festus Mogae of Botswana (2008), and President Joaquim Chissano of Mozambique (2007). Nelson Mandela was the inaugural Honorary Laureate in 2007.Mo Ibrahim Prize recognizes and celebrates African leaders who, under challenging circumstances, have developed their countries, and lifted people out of poverty and paved the way for sustainable and equitable prosperity. Top Intranets Embrace Mobile Accessibility and Social Networking

first_imgCognitive Automation is the Immediate Future of… Intranets are becoming a higher priority for organizations. Intranet teams are growing in size, and the best of them are embracing new trends such as mobile accessibility and social networking.These are some of the findings from Jakob Nielsen’s annual report on the top intranets for 2010. Companies that made the list this year include General Electric, Trend Micro Devices and Walmart. Nielsen is recognized as one of the world’s foremost usability experts. His findings appear solid, though it is apparent that Intranet development is just on the verge of becoming a central communication environment for enterprise collaboration.This year, Nielsen says, top companies on the list had a median size of about 6,300 employees, which continues a year-to-year trend toward smaller businesses. He attributes it to the increase in availability of small-company-friendly intranet technology.In addition, intranet teams are growing, up to 14 people, 27% higher than the average team size in 2006. This is not a big surprise. The need to develop the best possible internal communications environments now cuts across multiple platforms, ranging from the web to mobile devices. More resources are required to keep these platforms synced and accessible to the employees in the organization.Mobile Intranet SitesThe best intranets had a separate mobile site for their employees. Of the companies polled, only 30% actually had a dedicated mobile site. Expect this to change in the year ahead. People are still getting to know how to use smart phones. It’s still rare for companies to launch application environments for users, but at least one company did: an iPhone web app. Soon, though, users will expect to have access “anytime, anywhere,” to their organization’s network. Social FeaturesThe social Web is finding its way into intranets. Nielsen cites two trends:social features for employees as individualsworkgroup support and other features that encourage work-related connectionsHe cites Walmart for its discussion and profile pages and Trend Micro’s TrendSpace, which includes the capability for employees to create their own content. Trend Micro goes as far as offering an elaborate system of reward points that accrue to employees when they contribute to the intranet’s community features.It’s noteworthy that social features are still just emerging in intranet environments, especially with the advent of enterprise collaboration services. Companies still have the chance to be recognized as innovators in this space, especially if they implement real-time update capabilities and mashup environments.Intranet Design is MaturingOverall, Nielsen comes to the conclusion that intranet design is maturing. In many respects, the Intranet has come of age.In the year ahead, intranets will change even more. Contract limit for jobless engineers raised in Maharashtra

first_imgWith an eye on next year’s elections, the Maharashtra government has announced fresh sops and financial assistance for jobless engineers and defunct power looms across the State. The government on Friday increased contract limits for jobless engineers from the existing ₹75 lakh to ₹1.50 crore, increasing empanelment limits to 20 years from the existing 10 and five in various categories, officials confirmed. “Some departments have been individually giving works worth up to ₹75 lakh to unemployed engineers. This has been extended to all departments, with an increased limit of ₹1.5 crore in several categories. For these departments, too, we have set up an empanelment limit of five and ten years which has now been increased to 20 years,” said Sachin Chivate, under secretary, Maharashtra Government. Earlier this year, at a convocation ceremony at IIT- Bombay, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had urged engineering institutions to focus more on quality rather than quantity of students for research in cutting-edge science and technology, with focus on national priorities. Mr. Modi had said the country is producing over seven lakh engineers every year but not all of them are graduating with the right set of skills. For the small scale industries and cooperatives working in the textile sector, the State has announced an interest on loan subsidy for struggling power looms. The scheme was formally announced by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Union Minister Smriti Irani while inaugurating the PowerTex India Schemes in 43 cities earlier this year. “We have opened a new budget head for providing funds for the scheme this year,” said a textile department official.last_img read more
