The Dutchman enjoyed great success at Old Trafford, before a falling out with Sir Alex Ferguson resulted in him joining Real Madrid in 2006.And the striker admitted he took the first steps to mend their broken relationship.”It was very harsh, both ways,” he told Eleven Sports.”Especially after five years of having such a strong bond. I learned so much from him, and in all modesty: he from me too.”And yet the end was ruthless.”He added: “It was me who took the first step to make it okay again. I called him. A few times a year I felt bad about what I had done to him and the names I called him when he kept me on the bench the entire match in the League Cup final in Cardiff. In a blind rage I shouted at him.”I called him something. I called him a number of things in a blind rage. Cocky and stubborn as I was, I couldn’t snap out of that for some time after. That’s how it all crashed.”It was just really disrespectful, there were lots of other people there. It wasn’t all that outrageous in terms of words but it was completely out of order. Not done.”I wasn’t proud of it, still am not.” last_img read more

first_imgAbout the authorPaul VegasShare the loveHave your say Watford boss Quique Sanchez Flores: The result today damages me a lotby Paul Vegasa month agoSend to a friendShare the loveWatford boss Quique Sanchez Flores fears for his players after their 8-0 thrashing by Manchester City.He apologised numerous times to the club’s supporters following the thumping loss, but claims that the nature of the performance makes his position as coach more difficult.”We know how tough is the Premier League and every single match,” said Sanchez Flores.”When we accepted the invitation of the club to come here, to lead the team, we knew we were going to play against Arsenal and we were going to play against Manchester City.”It’s not about the margin you have when you come or not. Pep said yesterday in his press conference we know it’s not about you as a coach, it’s about the results.”So, of course, the result today it damages a lot myself, but one week ago, the results supported me. “We can see more than one week, we can see longer than one next match. It’s like this, so we need to live with this kind of consequence. It’s like this, it’s our work.”First we have to say sorry to the fans because they came to the stadium waiting for a good performance from the team and it was very difficult to be on the pitch today.”After 30 seconds we realised it would be very tough and then after 15 minutes it was impossible to play like this.” last_img read more

US Tim Hortons franchisee group sues RBI over alleged price gouging equity

first_imgA group of U.S. Tim Hortons franchisees filed a lawsuit Tuesday alleging their parent company engaged in price gouging and equity theft.Restaurant Brands International “established a very aggressive and improper investment strategy in the Tim Hortons franchisee system, which resulted in the economic squeezing of Tim Hortons franchisees by RBI,” reads the suit filed in the Eleventh Judicial Circuit of Florida court on behalf of the American chapter of the Great White North Franchisee Association.None of the allegations have been proven in court and RBI disputes the allegations. The U.S. GWNFA group, which says it represents about half of all American Tim Hortons franchisees, claims RBI and Tim Hortons USA strip them of income and profit through increased and improper franchisee fees.RBI raised the prices of necessary products and services — like food supplies, paper cups, containers and cleaning supplies — that franchisees must purchase from approved vendors, according to the suit. These prices are “significantly above” open market prices, the suit alleges.Tim Hortons franchisees pay $104.08 more per case of Applewood bacon than Wendy’s franchisees do, according to the court documents, and $23.85 more for boxes of diet and regular Coke.It also claims the company requires franchisees who want to sell their stores to first offer it to the company for the five-year declining depreciated value of the furniture, fixtures and equipment. The GWNFA wants the court to declare the practices a breach of contract.RBI spokeswoman Devinder Lamsar said in an emailed statement that the lawsuit “does not at all reflect the facts.”She said the company “will respond in due course with the facts to this U.S.-based claim” and that RBI works closely with its Canadian and U.S. advisory boards made up of franchisees committed to its plan to grow the business and franchisee profitability.“These franchisees have been unfairly squeezed by Tim Hortons/RBI to the point where they are, in many cases, no longer viable businesses,” said Jerry Marks, one of the lawyers representing the GWNFA in this case, in a statement.“We expect to stop this type of abusive franchisor behaviour.”RBI is also facing two lawsuits from the Canadian GWNFA chapter, including one alleging the company improperly used money from a national advertising fund.Follow @AleksSagan on Twitter.Companies in this story: (TSX:QSR)last_img read more

Accidental Prez

first_imgIrony gasped when the ‘Servant Of The People’ actually ended up being just that. In a very interesting turn of events, a comedian with absolutely no political moorings has been elected as the President of Ukraine with 73 per cent votes. Volodymyr Zelenskiy became a phenomenon with his landslide electoral victory in the Ukrainian Presidential polls announcing the departure of the incumbent President Petro Poroshenko. The 41-year-old comedian, as though prophetically, starring in a political satirical drama called ‘Servant Of The People’ (streaming on Netflix) plays a character that accidentally becomes the President of Ukraine. This remarkable win is viewed as one against social injustice, corruption, and a war with Russian-backed separatists in eastern Ukraine that has claimed over 13000 lives. As the world looks on, the President-elect has his platter of issues ready before him. His policies are eagerly looked forward to. Zelenskiy will assume office in about a month’s time and among the primary questions already swirling around him are about his policy position towards Russia. Zelenskiy is a native Russian speaker and critiques accuse him of having a soft stance towards Russian aggression: mainly the support for separatists in eastern Ukraine and the annexation of Crimea in 2014. He is also accused of accepting funds and financial assistance from the Kremlin and has been touted as the preferred choice of Russian President Vladimir Putin who has had a rocky relation with the outgoing Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko. Zelenskiy’s previous on and off friendly inclination to Russia and the criticism he attracted from the Russian media seem passé before the promises he made to the people of Ukraine proper to the polls. The promise to bring home 24 Ukrainian sailors under arrest in Russia after being captured in a naval incident near Crimea earlier this year is claimed to be his number one priority; he has stated that talks are unavoidable between Ukraine and Russia because there’s a “real war” between the countries, adding that “there can’t be any compromise on Ukraine’s sovereignty and independence. “We don’t sell our people and we don’t sell our territories.” This boldness is quite a turnaround from what he said in March 2014: “I really want to address Mr. Putin. Dear Vladimir Vladimirovich! Do not allow even the hint of a military conflict to happen. Because Russia and Ukraine really are brotherly nations… If you want, I can beg you on my knees. But please, do not put our people on their knees.” Allegations and controversies apart, the intensity of Zelenskiy’s thumping victory speaks more loudly of the fact that the public wants a change more than anything else.last_img read more

More migrants enter Spains north African territories

first_imgMadrid- Fifteen African migrants, including a young girl, entered Spain’s north African territory of Melilla illegally on Monday on a small inflatable boat, Spanish authorities said.Three other African migrants entered Ceuta, Spain’s other north African Territory, by passing underneath a barbed wire border fence, officials said.Ceuta and Melilla — which sit across the Mediterranean from mainland Spain, surrounded by Moroccan territory — are a key entry point for migrants seeking a better life in Europe. The two cities have the European Union’s only land borders with Africa. The rubber dinghy carrying the 15 migrants entered Melilla in the early hours of Monday though the territory’s commercial port, the regional government said in a statement.“The migrants started to run as soon as they reached the port and were detained by police,” the statement said. The migrants included one girl aged under 18 and 14 adult men.Meanwhile in Ceuta, located about 400 kilometres (250 miles) to the west of Melilla, three African migrants crossed underneath the barbed wire fence separating the territory from Morocco through a pipe, a spokesman for the regional government said.Police on Sunday caught a 19-year-old from Mali hiding inside a suitcase that was being carried by a Moroccan man across the border into Melilla from the Moroccan border town of Beni Ansar.“The difficulties which the man had in carrying the suitcase raised the suspicions of the authorities,” police said in a statement. At least 14 migrants drowned in Moroccan waters on February 6 while trying to enter Ceuta by sea after several hundred tried to storm the land border. In that incident, Spanish security forces were accused by human rights groups and witnesses of firing rubber bullets at the immigrants, sparking a heated debate in Spain. In response Spain’s interior ministry said last week it had banned border guards from firing rubber bullets to stop migrants crossing the fence into its north African territories.More 200 migrants stormed across a triple-layer border fence into Melilla on Friday in what Spanish authorities said was one of the largest such crossings in years.last_img read more

Video replays necessary in FIFA to catch cheaters

The past week has been a tumultuous one in the international soccer world, as more than a few strong contenders found themselves forced into playoffs whose outcomes ultimately decided their world cup status. In international soccer — or football, as the rest of the world knows it — there isn’t a bigger spectacle. Held every four years, the FIFA World Cup draws the top 32 international teams to the biggest tournament on earth, an event that normally draws the eyes of a few billion people.Although a few key squads have traditionally dominated the World Cup, that huge gap has been closing in the past few years. This time around, some previously unknown and unlikely contenders have arisen and were welcomed to the world stage. For example, the normally illustrious Italian team was defeated earlier this year in the Confederations Cup by a terrific Egyptian squad. Similarly, the up-and-coming Irish team brilliantly showed France, runner-up from the last World Cup, just how intimidating it has become as a team.Oh, wait. That’s not exactly how it happened. What really happened was that it was an extremely close game after Ireland tied the points in aggregate. Basically, whoever scored next would secure a bid to the World Cup; a glorious feat both sides had been working hard on for years.Late in the game, a French ball crossed into the Irish box and was in danger of overshooting the mark. Thierry Henry, a French striker and one of the most respected international football players, then handled the ball in an unorthodox manner — he prevented the ball from going out of bounds with the palm of his hands. The three officials were in blind spots and couldn’t see the “hand of shame” so when Henry passed it to a teammate to head it in and score, the referee allowed the “obvious” goal despite the strong appeals by not only the goalie and defenders but also thousands sitting in the stadium that saw the ordeal take place. This isn’t the first time something like this has happened in football. Diego Maradona famously tapped a ball in with his hand (the so called “hand of god” goal) to score a goal that ultimately gave Argentina the 1986 World Cup.It wasn’t fair back then and you can be sure it is still a ridiculous farce today. It’s easy to jump to a bizarre theory to explain all this, of course. Did FIFA just want to get France a guaranteed spot in the World Cup? Perhaps the Fédération Internationale de Football Association couldn’t stand to see a World Cup occur without its beloved Les Blues. All conspiracy theories put aside, this situation does present a huge problem with not only football but also some other major sports (Baseball, I am looking directly at you). The human officials are not enough as we clearly see time and time again. It’s getting a little ridiculous, but what’s even worse is that no one is acknowledging that a problem does indeed exist. There’s something wrong with football. And until that problem is solved we can’t give the competing teams a fair and balanced game play, which is the one common promise that is characteristic of all sports. Although I am not going to pretend to know what the solution is, I suggest video replays be permitted, allowing for extra reviews in the dead minutes after a goal is scored. Then and only then can international football return to being the fair, fun, competitive sport that I, along with billions, so strongly love.Meanwhile, let’s see how many more players can creatively and secretively get away with using their hands in football, joining that oh so prestigious club of Henry, Maradona and Lionel Messi. read more

Wrestling No 6 Ohio State brings nationleading 10man lineup into NCAA Championships

No. 2 Kollin Moore gets his hand raised after defeating No. 19 Malik McDonald of North Carolina State University by major decision in the 197-pound bout, 15-6. Credit: Sal Marandino | For The LanternThe Ohio State wrestling team will be the only team in the nation to represent all 10 weight classes when it heads to Pittsburgh Thursday to compete for a title in the NCAA Championships.No. 6 Ohio State (12-2, 7-2 Big Ten) will try to win the NCAA Championship as a team after finishing second each of the past two postseasons to Penn State. The Buckeyes have the edge as the only team with the ability to gain points in all 10 weight classes, and with multiple wrestlers in contention for individual championships.“Let’s not take for granted the fact that we did what no other team did this year in the country in regard to qualifying [all 10 wrestlers],” Ohio State head coach Tom Ryan said. “But also, it is Ohio State, and we can attract the best, and we are all seeking perfection and that’s what we are after.”The Buckeyes’ 10-man lineup earned five top-5 seeds for the 2019 NCAA Wrestling Championships. Ohio State senior Myles Martin, the No. 1 wrestler in the country at 184 pounds, received the only top seed for the Buckeyes.Martin is one of only 12 wrestlers nationally to own an undefeated record heading into the NCAA Championships.Ryan said Martin has a lot of pressure to win the national title but is confident in his abilities.“I believe [Martin] is the best pound-for-pound wrestler in the tournament,” Ryan said. “We will see come Thursday.”Ohio State senior Joey McKenna, the No. 2 wrestler in the country at 141 pounds, avenged one of his two losses on the season in the Big Ten 141-pound championship match by defeating Penn State sophomore Nick Lee, the then-No. 2 wrestler in the NCAA at 141 pounds.McKenna could have a chance to avenge the only other wrestler that has defeated him this season in Cornell sophomore Yianni Diakomihalis, who is the No. 1 wrestler at 141 pounds and remains undefeated, should they both reach the finals.Ryan said McKenna learned from his loss, and knows what he needs to do to defeat No. 1 seed Diakomihalis.“[McKenna] had a great match with [Diakomihalis]. We liked the way the match went,” Ryan said. “He has to finish some of the shots he didn’t finish.”Ohio State redshirt senior Micah Jordan and redshirt junior Kollin Moore, the No. 2 wrestlers in the country at 149 pounds and 197 pounds, respectively, both head into the NCAA Championships as the other two No. 2 seeds for the Buckeyes.Jordan has lost only two matches this season, both to Rutgers’ Anthony Ashnault, who is the top seed at 149 pounds.Moore also has two losses to one wrestler: undefeated Penn State redshirt senior Bo Nickal, the No. 1 wrestler in the country at 197 pounds.Ryan said the wrestlers must go match by match and he expects big things from Jordan and Moore.“They got to be really smart with the tactics they use and the skill they use when they use it,” Ryan said. “A lot of this at times boils down to quality decision-making.”Ohio State junior Luke Pletcher, the No. 9 wrestler in the country at 133 pounds, received the No. 5 seed in the NCAA Championships after a strong performance in the Big Ten Tournament, finishing as the runner-up.Pletcher said the 133-pound weight class was very difficult this season, but still feels ready to compete.“No matter where they put you in that bracket, it is going to be a brutal way,” Pletcher said. “I think I got a good [seed], ready to wrestle and feel good [about] getting back my mojo and ready to rock.”Ohio State senior Te’Shan Campbell, the No. 16 wrestler in the country at 165 pounds, received the No. 21 seed in the NCAA Championships.Campbell transferred to Ohio State from the University of Pittsburgh after the 2017 season and talked about what it means to him to be wrestling in front of his hometown in Pittsburgh for the NCAA Championships.“Why not have it at home [when] it could be anywhere?” Campbell said. “I look forward to the experience of going back home with friends and family and being able to celebrate with them.”No. 6 Ohio State will attempt to win its first NCAA Championship since 2015 starting at noon Thursday in Pittsburgh. read more

Salah not a Galactico – Balague

Review Juventus – Real Madrid

first_imgReal Madrid won 3-0 at Juventus, but that’s not the main news from this match, believe or not. Go see Cristiano Ronaldo’s second goal of the match and you’ll understand what I’m talking about.Massimiliano Allegri had to make a couple of tweaks to his starting lineup. Pjanic and Benatia were unavailable due to accumulation of yellow cards. Barzagli started in place of Benatia and Bentancur replaced Pjanic. Both Alex Sandro and Kwadwo Asamoah were on the pitch from minute one, as Allegri decided to go with a bit more careful approach. Dybala was in the starting eleven as well, while Mandzukic and Matuidi were on the bench. Zidane went classic, putting his best team (the one that has won this competition in the past two seasons) on the field. Carvajal, Varane, Ramos, Marcelo, Casemiro, Modric, Kroos, Isco, Ronaldo and Benzema with Navas on goal.It took three minutes for Real Madrid to take the lead. Marcelo made a terrific pass to Isco, fooling two defenders. Isco started moving towards the box and saw Ronaldo coming. He sent a low pass and the Portuguese master marksman flicked the ball in for the 1-0 lead. There couldn’t have been a worse start for Juventus, who were on the receiving end of an early goal this time around, after doing the same to Tottenham in the previous round. It was Ronaldo’s 13th Champions League goal this season. Higuain almost scored in the 23rd minute after a free kick landed on his foot. Navas used his reflexes to deflect the shot and prevent the equalizer.Bentancur received the first yellow card of the fixture in the 27th minute for a sliding challenge on Casemiro that the referee saw as a foul, although it wasn’t. In the 36th minute, Toni Kroos hit the cross bar with a thumping long-range effort. Juventus was trying to create something. However, it lacked ideas in the midfield, it lacked a creator. Khedira was doing his best, but one player isn’t enough. Real was simply too dangerous on the counter-attack for Juventus to completely open up. In the 45th minute Dybala was booked for diving. The Champions League holders had the lead at half-time.Marcelo doesn’t think Madrid needs more players Manuel R. Medina – August 20, 2019 According to Real Madrid defender Marcelo, the team doesn’t need more footballer as the transfer window is set to close really soon.It was somewhat surprising to see that Allegri didn’t make any lineup changes at the half. In the 50th minute, Ronaldo took a shot from a tight angle and almost found the corner of the goal at the far post. Five minutes later, the referee Cakir showed Ramos a yellow card that will see him miss the second leg. Dybala took the ensuing free kick, which deflected off the wall and almost ended up in Madrid’s net. Zidane pulled the trigger first, replacing Benzema with Lucas Vasquez. There were too many fouls being made. They sliced the game up and didn’t allow for any momentum to be built. The experiment with Asamoah as the left back and Alex Sandro as the left winger wasn’t working for Juventus. What a sensational goal we saw in the 64th minute!!! Chiellini made a mess of an easy situation at the back by stealing the ball away from Buffon. Ronaldo took it and passed it on to a free Vasquez who took a shot which was saved by Buffon. The ball ended up with Carvajal, who crossed the ball in the center of the box hoping someone will use it. Ronaldo set himself up quickly and fired an amazing bicycle kick. Buffon was powerless. An absolutely brilliant moment of pure magic. Even Juventus’ fans gave one of the best footballers in history a standing ovation. Dybala high-kicked Carvajal just a minute after the goal, earning his second yellow card. The game was firmly in Madrid’s hands. In the 72nd minute, Marcelo made a great forward run. After a one-two pass with Ronaldo, he was face-to-face with Buffon, managed to push the ball past him and scored in the empty net. The difference in class between the teams was becoming more obvious by the minute. Allegri used all of his substitutions, but Juventus was just trying to prevent further embarrassment. Barzagli almost gifted Ronaldo a hat-trick in the 85th minute. Two minutes after that, Mateo Kovacic, who came in place of Modric, hit the cross bar, Real Madrid’s second of the match.Waiting for the sound of the final whistle was torture for the home team. Buffon saved Ronaldo’s 90th minute hat-trick attempt. In the 92nd minute, Ronaldo was all alone in the box. Lucas Vasquez found him, but the ball was just a bit behind, enough for Portugal’s captain to misshit it. Juve was close to a consolation goal in the 93rd minute, but Cuadrado missed. That was it. Everyone should be scared of Los Galacticos at the moment. In the form they’re currently in, it’ll take a Herculean effort to beat them.last_img read more
