Donegal entrepreneurs leading the way on ACORNS Programme

first_imgAn exciting six months lie ahead for the eight successful Donegal entrepreneurs who have earned a coveted place on the ACORNS initiative for women-led start-up businesses. The businesswomen all battled strong competition to gain a place on the peer-led support network for rural Ireland.Donegal has the highest number of female entrepreneurs on ACORNS this cycle, who will be benefiting from the expert support of Deirdre McGlone. Inishowen is well represented with two participants running their business from the peninsula. The places went to Avril McMonagle founder of Meantóir,  a specialist training and professional support service for early childhood education; and Carlene Lyttle of Sailespin a specialist business support service for companies looking to foster growth. The mantle for the south of the county is being carried by Joanne Butler of OURganic Gardens – a garden project combining education, tourism and community based in beautiful Gort a’Choirce and Meg O’Gara of Megnificent Creative based in Kilcar offering graphic design and creative illustration. Bundoran also features well with Nicola Gavigan from the unique experience Seclusion Spa at Ardfarna and Sinead Fox from the already award-winning Salty Fox Coffee Shop. Marie Hutchinson from the well-being focused Mojo Yoga and Wellness Studio in Donegal Town and Sue Glackin of Donegal Food Tours based in Letterkenny complete the Donegal posse of entrepreneurs embarking on this exciting opportunity. Built on a belief that entrepreneurs learn best from each other, the ACORNS initiative is facilitated by ‘Lead Entrepreneurs’; women who have started and grown successful businesses in rural Ireland. The Donegal Acorns group is led by successful businesswoman Deirdre McGlone, former ‘Donegal Person of the Year’ and President of the Donegal Women in Business Network. Over the next six months Deirdre will work with the eight women-led businesses to maximise their business through peer-support, mentoring, and networking. The businesses supported by the previous Acorns initiative recorded a 43% increase in turnover. Access to finance and marketing were the barriers to developing businesses in rural Ireland, as identified by the participants, which ACORNS aims to address over the next 6 months. ACORNS is funded under the Rural Innovation and Development Fund through the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine. SA census app to improve planning

first_img14 August 2013 South African mapping firm mapIT has released a location-based business intelligence application, MarketScope, based on Statistics South Africa’s census 2011 data, as a tool to improve government and business planning. The app has incorporated data for race, gender, age, income, education, language, employment status, household size and total population within local and district municipal boundaries. “This inclusion of the census data offers enterprise and government a comprehensive geo-spatial snapshot of their operations to allow planning, benchmarking and market analyses. It’s a virtual replication of reality,” mapIT managing director, Etienne Louw, said in a statement on Monday. MarketScope also comes standard with navigation service provider TomTom’s mapping data to ensure accurate analysis and benchmarking. TomTom has developed the most extensive mapping database in the world and includes over 10-million kilometres of roads and 2-million points of interest in Africa. “MarketScope’s four-module application geo-codes, imports, integrates and overlays proprietary information – customer, store, supplier and logistical data and third-party demographic research including census 2011 – onto a digital map for analysis and display in a geo-spatial context,” mapIT said. The four modules are client centric information, router, locator and spatial analyser. MarketScope also provides “decision-makers the ability to compare and contrast company data on consumers, sales patterns and customer trends with the latest census 2011 data and demographic information such as Living Standards Measures”, according to mapIT. Another feature of the app is the drive time analysis, which determines a drive time zone – the distance travelled through a road network in the given time. “The tool selects a driving time according to the nature of a business and how much time people would probably be willing to spend in their cars to get to this location,” the company said. One More Thing: Multitouch on Nexus One Is Just a Hack Away (VIDEO)

first_imgRelated Posts And here’s how that was accomplished. European hackers figured out how to jailbreak the device a scant month after its release. In the States, the folks at AllDroid sussed out how to port the web browser from the Motorola Milestone – which does support multitouch – over to the Droid. Granted, the hack only works for web browsers, but it’s a significant improvement for those who can live with a bricked phone. The hack requires the would-be multitouch hero to get root access to the phone and install and delete certain components. Clearly, this user runs the risk of breaking the device and may violate Motorola’s TOS and void the warranty. All of the above applies to the Droid. However, the same stipulations that prevent multitouch on that device also apply to the Nexus One: It’s not a hardware issue; the software is simply locked. So, we’re likely looking at a wait of a few days to see who wants to risk a $500+ device in the quest for an Android-powered multitouch mobile via TOS-violating hacks.Apple’s involvement with the stalling or prevention of more and better multitouch devices has been a topic of speculation in the mobile gadget press since last year, when a group of several key patents for specific gestures were published. Since then, several multitouch devices, such as Palm’s Pre, have been released without legal fanfare. Still, some speculate that Google’s holding out on multitouch for legal reasons.“I think at this point that’s more of a legal consideration than a technical one, since many phones that run Android have the capability of supporting multitouch on a hardware level,” wrote Jason Chen of Gizmodo when he toyed with the device last month. And Chris Ziegler of Engadget said, “This is still very much a sensitive subject – but at least we have some confirmation that it’s a software limitation alone… there’s definitely some logic (probably legal logic, but logic nonetheless) behind which devices are getting it in which markets.”What do you think – is this a patent issue? Or is the software simply not ready for public consumption yet? Better yet, if you had one of these devices, would you jailbreak it for multitouch capabilities? Let us know in the comments. Tags:#web Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… The only thing preventing Google’s Nexus One phone from supporting multitouch features might be Apple’s patents.Allow me to explain: There is nothing in the hardware of this device to prevent multitouch as evinced by Google’s comment this morning at their press conference. When asked if the Nexus One would one day support multitouch, a Google rep responded, “We’ll consider it.” In a word, this means that the hardware is ready for users’ pinching and zooming, but the current iteration of Google’s software is locked to prohibit multitouch for legal reasons. We give the hackers of the mobile world a couple days to hack the device – after all, it’s already been done on the Droid. Here’s a video showing multitouch on a Droid: Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Market jolie odelllast_img read more

Arabian Knightz Rap the Revolution, MideastTunes Burns the Track

first_imgTags:#music#web *Are there any rapping imams? 5 Outdoor Activities for Beating Office Burnout curt hopkins 9 Books That Make Perfect Gifts for Industry Ex… 4 Keys to a Kid-Safe App Related Posts 12 Unique Gifts for the Hard-to-Shop-for People… Egyptian hip-hop group Arabian Knightz are the first off the block with a rap to celebrate the ongoing revolution. “Arabian Knightz feat. Lauryn Hill – Rebel (Prod. Iron Curtain).mp3” is the rough mix of a song that bears witness to the awakening of a new sensibility in their country. “Rebel” comes courtesy of a fascinating project called MideastTunes, whose mission is to share “music for social change” from the Middle East online, both among MENA countries and with the wider world. Temperature’s droppin’ at the rotten oasisThe three Cairo-based rappers (yes, the Middle East has rappers as well as imams*), Rush, Sphinx and E-Money, recorded the song in the midst of the uprising and released it, raw, yesterday, the first day the Internet was restored to Egypt. The track is rapped in Arabic and English and is built around a Lauren Hill sample. As it says on their MideastTunes page: “‘Rebel’ is an emotionally empowering song that captures the heart, courage & spirit of the Egyptian people currently embattled in a Revolution against an oppressive leadership.”The track itself is hacked off uncooked and awkward and beautiful. Protest music is at best yawn-inducing and at worst pretentious if it doesn’t deliver its message on an interesting acoustic level. This song does. (Despite HIll’s whiskey delivery, it could use a bit less of her and a bit more AK.) I found myself replaying it half a dozen times – beyond journalistic necessity. As a band alone, Arabian Knightz seem worth keeping an ear out for. As a voice of a revolution, well, that’s putting a hell of a lot of pressure on them, but they certainly captured one moment of it on key and in time. MideastTunesMideastTunes is another product of the whippersnapper-powered Middle Eastern idea machine MideastYouth. It covers the music of the region with a completeness that is pretty near unrivalled and certainly is ahead of the game in knowing how to present it. The site has an in-site music player, search function, and even a radio station, Re-Volt Radio. Users can browse by genre and by country of musical origin. Jordanian house? Yeah boys. Lebanese punk? Don’t mind if I do. During the Iranian protests during the last “election” there, the site was a hotbed of ideas changing hands, moving from ear to ear. The instantaneousness of social media means when a person or people have an idea they can bang it out in a hurry. What remains when time sifts out the products of the revolutions going around is anybody’s guess. For now, Arabian Knightz and MideastTunes is a good place to start. last_img read more
