Team India must learn from defeat in Dharamsala: Sourav Ganguly to India Today

first_imgIndia’s proud ODI record is on the line in the second match in Mohali against Sri Lanka. The Men in Blue have won seven straight bilateral ODI series but were humiliated at home in the first match of the series against a team ranked No.8 in the world. Now ahead of the crucial 2nd ODI in Mohali, former India captain Sourav Ganguly has advised the team to learn from their mistakes in Dharamsala which saw the team collapse for 112 all out.Sourav Ganguly told India Today, “There is a lesson for India to learn from the collapse in the 1st ODI and that is that Ajinkya Rahane must play in the ODI team. Yes Shreyas Iyer 2 years down the line will be a good player if you keep giving him opportunities along with Manish Pandey but at this stage their technique has been found wanting in these conditions. So India needs to find the right balance & India needs to find the right people for positions 4 & 5 and stick with them. If you ask me my opinion then I would say No.4 & 5 have got to be KL Rahul & Ajinkya Rahane.”Rahane’s omission from the playing XI surprised most cricket pundits specially given his form in the limited-overs format. In the two full ODI series that he has played this year, Rahane has been arguably India’s best batsman with four scores of 50+ each. He did struggle in the Tests against the Lankans but Sourav believes that Rahane needs game time to be prepared for the South African challenge.advertisement”I hope management thinks of getting him back because he is quality and he has been successful in ODIs. In the last 2 series against West Indies & Australia he was wonderful. To get his form back ahead of the SA Test series and to make him feel good, Rahane must have been included in the team. Runs are runs, no matter what format you play and it would have helped him go to South Africa in a better frame of mind. He should have batted at 3 and I think he is a better player than all of them Shreyas Iyer, Dinesh Karthik or Manish Pandey. Maybe he has failed a few games but the class does not go away. I think he should be persisted with and I think he should be playing specially with Virat Kohli rested because Rahane is a class act”, said Sourav to India Today.Rahane’s omission in the Dharamsala ODI even left former India cricketer Nikhil Chorpa stumped. Nikhil added, “Surprised that Rahane was not in the playing XI because he is someone who can control the game and (can accelerate) as an when needed he can play the big shots but he needs to spend time in the middle.”India has won last 4 of the 5 ODIs played in Mohali and will hope to continue the trend against Sri Lanka and level the series. The Mohali conditions will also suit the batsmen better than Dharamsala as on each of the last 5 matches played at the PCA ground, the teams batting first have always crossed the 250 run mark. While Sourav has urged India to include Rahane in the XI, he feels the middle order is not yet settled as we prepare for the 2019 World Cup.”Whether it is Dinesh Karthik, Manish Pandey, Shreyas Iyer or Ajinkya Rahane (not to forget Kedar Jadhav, Hardik Pandya & MS Dhoni), none of us can give an answer whether these boys are an answer to no.4, 5 or 6 positions for the ODI team for the World Cup. You ask me who are the two openers I will say Rohit Sharma & Shikhar Dhawan, you ask me the number 3 and I will say Virat Kohli, but you ask me who will be in the team at number 4, 5 or 6 and we will be saying is it between Rahane, Rahul, Manish Pandey or Shreyas Iyer. Whoever they pick will have to be given proper opportunity before the 2019 World Cup so that is an area in which India needs to have a look. KL Rahul will be my choice by far because I think he is our best batsmen in all conditions but I get the feeling that selectors do not favour him at no.4”, concluded the former skipper.Rohit Sharma too will be itching to get his 1st victory as India’s limited overs captain. After the 2nd ODI in Mohali on Wednesday, the series will conclude on Sunday in Vizag.last_img read more
