PENSIONER TELLS PROTESTERS OF SHOCKING CUTS TO HER HOME HELP

first_imgAn 85 year old pensioner told a protest march this afternoon how her home help hours were being cut from five hours per week to just one and half hours.Heartbroken Martha Peoples was one of hundreds of people who took part in a rally in Letterkenny against the latest Government cuts.Mrs Peoples, from Churchill said she now cries when her home help leaves her home because it will be a week before she will see her again. She revealed she has had two knee operations and now suffers from serious arthritis of the spine.“I am depressed and angry at what this Government is doing. My hours have been cut by 70%.“Is this the way this Government now treats their elderly citizens?“They tell me I will be okay if I can get up out of bed and get back into bed at night. “But they don’t care if my house is bogging or that I cannot manage to wash myself properly. They have taken away my dignity,” she said.Mrs Peoples received huge applause from hundreds who marched through Letterkenny to protest at the town’s Market Square yesterday afternoon.A soup kitchen was set up for more than 300 protesters who carried placards and shouted slogans.Traffic came to a standstill as the marchers walked down the town’s Main Street. The protest was organised by local unions including SIPTU, the INMO and IMPACT. Many nurses in their hospital uniforms and home help assistants also turned up to support the march. Also present were local politicians including Deputies Joe McHugh (FG), Charlie McConalogue (FF), Padraig MacLochlainn (SF), Pearse Doherty (SF) and Senator Brian O’Domhnaill (FF).PENSIONER TELLS PROTESTERS OF SHOCKING CUTS TO HER HOME HELP was last modified: October 20th, 2012 by StephenShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)Tags:Churchillhome help cutsletterkennyMartha Peoplesprotestlast_img read more
